Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago on a 147-acre campus, offers primary, extended and specialty care to all veterans and is a key treatment facility within the Great Lakes regional network of VA hospitals and outpatient clinics. Specialized clinical programs include Blind Rehabilitation, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurosurgery, Radiation Therapy and Cardiovascular Surgery. The hospital also serves as the southern tier hub of the Great Lakes region for pathology, radiology, radiation therapy, human resource management and fiscal services.

Hines VA hospital is a leader in treatment equality and is committed to providing quality care to all veterans, including the estimated 26,000 Illinois veterans who identify as LGBT. In order to provide culturally-sensitive and appropriate services to the LGBT community, Hines VA hospital emphasizes four core elements: 1) patient non-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation and gender identity, 2) an equal visitation policy that allows any person the patient chooses, including same-sex partners to be present during a patient’s stay, 3) an employment non-discrimination policy, and 4) training in LGBT patient-centered care. Their efforts in promoting equality were recognized in 2013 by the Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index as being a leader in LGBT Health Care Equality.

Hines VA hospital currently operates 471 beds and six community based outpatient clinics in Elgin, Kankakee, Oak Lawn, Aurora, LaSalle, and Joliet. Over 600,000 patient visits occurred in fiscal year 2010 providing care to over 54,000 veterans, primarily from Cook, DuPage and Will counties. In FY 2010 the budget for Hines was over $510 million, allowing them to provide a wide range of primary and specialty services to all members of the veterans community.
