Sometimes youth knock at our door. Just as often, we go out and find them. We seek to prevent homelessness at its root, by reaching at-risk youth through multiple points of contact: in the communities where they live, work, study, worship, and socialize. By working closely with schools, local police, and social and religious institutions, we better understand the needs of youth who are homeless. These relationships also raise community awareness of the symptoms of and solutions to youth homelessness.

Through SCOPe (Street and Community Outreach Program), we offer support to youth ages 12 to 18 who are homeless. Immediate survival needs are the first priority. We offer to help reunify them with their families or secure other safe housing opportunities for them.

The vast majority of the youth we serve are African-American, with the remaining 10-15% coming from other backgrounds. About a third of these young people identify as LGBTQ. Most youth originate from the South or West sides of Chicago, neighborhoods often characterized by high poverty rates, gang violence, and substandard housing.
